Introducing the generalized, non-extensive statistics proposed byTsallis[1988], into the standard s-wave pairing BCS theory of superconductivityin 2D yields a reasonable description of many of the main properties of hightemperature superconductors, provided some allowance is made for non-phononmediated interactions.

The validity of (1-q) expansion and factorization approximations are analysedin the framework of Tsallis statistics. We employ exact expressions forclassical independent systems (harmonic oscillators) by considering theunnormalized and normalized constrainsts. We show that these approxiamtions cannot be accurate in the analysis of systems with many degrees of freedom.

By using a small rotation approach, we show that it is possible to obtainwell behaved perturbed solutions for the amplitude of the electromagnetic fieldpropagating in a photonic waveguide array. This array mimics the propagation ofa quasiparticle among the sites of an infinite one-dimensional chain.

A model is proposed for the classical electron as a point charge with finiteelectromagnetic self-energy. Modifications of the Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m (spin0) and Kerr-Newman (spin 1/2) solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations arederived. It is conjectured that spacetime curvature very close to the pointcharge deforms the electric and magnetic fields such as to reduce theself-energy to a finite value by means of Hawking polarization of the vacuum,much like that around a black hole.

We evaluate the important two-loop matrix element of theoperator (cbar gamma^mu P_L b) (sbar gamma_mu P_L b) contributing to theinclusive radiative decay B -> X_s gamma. The calculation is performed in theNDR scheme, by means of asymptotic expansions method. The result is given as aseries in z = m_c^2/m_b^2 up to O(z^6). We confirm the result of Greub, Hurthand Wyler obtained by a different method up to 0(z^3). Higher-order terms arefound to be numerically insignificant.

Texture zeros in the quark Yukawa matrices generally lead to precise andsimple expressions for CKM matrix elements in terms of ratios of quark masses.Using the new data on $b-$decays we test a particularly promising texture zerosolution and show that it is at best approximate. We analyse the approximatetexture zero structure and show it is consistent with experiment. Weinvestigate the implications for the CKM unitarity triangle, measurements at$BaBar$ and $BELLE$ as well as for the theories which invoke family symmetries.

In a recent paper, two of us (D.C. and R.N.M.) proposed a new way to break CPsymmetry geometrically using orbifold projections. The mechanism can berealized in the five dimensional brane bulk picture. In this paper, weelaborate on this proposal and provide additional examples of models of thistype. We also note the phenomenological implications of some of these models.

We discuss the role played by the horizontal flavour symmetry insupersymmetric theories. In particular, we consider the horizontal symmetry$SU(3)_H$ between the three fermion families and show how this concept can helpin explaining the fermion mass spectrum and mixing pattern in the context ofSUSY GUTs.

The $f$ sum rule is derived in a non-relativistic frame and connected, viaWard Identities, to the low energy Thomson scattering. A generalisation toisospin symmetry in the nuclear case is discussed and linked to the MesonExchange Currents. The extension to a fully relativistic theory is thendiscussed and it is shown that the energy-weighted sum rule becomes a relationbetween the particle-hole and particle-antiparticle emission. Moreover thegeneralisation to isospin symmetry is also allowed and providesnon-perturbative results.

We discuss the recent NA50 J/Psi production data in Pb--Pb collisions, inparticular the second drop at high transverse energies which correspond to themost central collisions. Using a model which relates the J/Psi suppression tothe local energy density, we show that the data can be explained by taking intoaccount transverse energy fluctuations at a given impact parameter. Predictionsof this model for RHIC are briefly discussed.
