We review studies of the electromagnetic response of various classes of correlated electron materials including transition metal oxides, organic and molecular conductors, intermetallic compounds with $d$- and $f$-electrons as well as magnetic semiconductors. Optical inquiry into correlations in all these diverse systems is enabled by experimental access to the fundamental characteristics of an ensemble of electrons including their self-energy and kinetic energy. Steady-state spectroscopy carried out over a broad range of frequencies from microwaves to UV light and fast optics time-resolved techniques provide complimentary prospectives on correlations. Because the theoretical understanding of strong correlations is still evolving, the review is focused on the analysis of the universal trends that are emerging out of a large body of experimental data augmented where possible with insights from numerical studies.

We report on several discrete molecular transition metal- and lanthanide-containing polyoxo-tungstates and -molybdates with a focus on their magnetic properties. The polyanions discussed here all contain 3d paramagnetic centers and are mostly of the spherical {Mo132} Keplerate type, the cyclic {P8W48} type, the dimeric {XIII2W18} (X = As, Sb) type, and the dimeric, fused {Si2W18} type. The number of incorporated magnetic ions in the structures described here ranges from 3 to 30.

The properties of kagome metals are governed by the interdependence of band topology and electronic correlations resulting in remarkably rich phase diagrams. Here, we study the temperature evolution of the bulk electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic kagome metal FeGe using infrared spectroscopy. We uncover drastic changes in the low-energy interband absorption at the 100 K structural phase transition that has been linked to a charge-density-wave (CDW) instability. We explain this effect by the minuscule Fe displacement in the kagome plane, which results in parallel bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level. In contrast to conventional CDW materials, however, the spectral weight shifts to low energies, ruling out the opening of a CDW gap in FeGe.

Studying the magnetic ground states of frustrated antiferromagnets provides unique insight into the stability of quantum spin liquids, even if the anticipated state is not realized towards T = 0. Particularly relevant are structural modifications setting in at temperatures where the magnetic correlations come into play. Here we explore the lattice dynamics of Y-kapellasite (Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8) single crystals by infrared spectroscopy in combination with ab initio calculations. We observe significant changes in the phonon spectra at Ts = 32 K, that gradually evolve down to low temperatures. The increase in the number of phonon modes provides evidence for a lowering of symmetry and we discuss several possibilities of crystal structure modifications. Our analysis also reveals that the structural variation involves exclusively H and O atoms, while the other atoms remain rather unaffected. An 8% red shift of the lowest-lying phonon mode upon cooling indicates strong magneto-elastic effects upon decoupling Cu-6f hexagons through the lattice vibrations.

The peculiar superconducting properties of granular aluminum, which consists of nanometer-sized aluminum grains separated by aluminum oxide, are attractive for applications in quantum circuitry, and they are interesting from a fundamental materials physics view. The phase diagram of granular aluminum as a function of normal-state resistivity features a superconducting dome with a maximum critical temperature Tc well above the Tc=1.2K of pure aluminum. Here, we show how the maximum Tc of this superconducting dome grows if the substrate temperature during deposition is lowered from 300 K to cooling with liquid nitrogen (150 and 100 K) and liquid helium (25 K). The highest Tc that we observe is 3.27 K. These results highlight that granular aluminum is a model system for complex phase diagrams of superconductors and demonstrate its potential in the context of high kinetic inductance applications. This is augmented by our observation of comparably sharp superconducting transitions of high-resistivity samples grown at cryogenic temperatures and by a thickness dependence even for films substantially thicker than the grain size.
