Particularly uniform: Monodisperse ferrite microspheres can be synthesized to have diameters of about 200–800 nm (TEM image, left). High-resolution TEM analysis (image, right and inset) shows that each microsphere is a single crystal. Their hydrophilic and magnetic properties impart to the microparticles many potential uses in electronics and biomedicine.

Nearly monodisperse single-crystalline Cu2O nanospheres were prepared by an effective solution method with NaBH4 as the reducing agent. Sensors based on them have good sensitivity to some flammable gases because thin films formed by nanospheres have capacious interspaces and enough spherical surfaces to interact with gases (ppm level).

Alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-MnO(2) single-crystal nanowires/nanorods with different aspect ratios have been successfully prepared by a common hydrothermal method based on the redox reactions of MnO(4)(-) and/or Mn(2+). The influences of oxidant, temperature, and inorganic cation (NH(4)(+) and K(+)) template concentrations on the morphology and crystallographic forms of the final products are discussed in this paper. It is interesting to find that all the MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures have a similar formation process: delta-MnO(2), which has a layer structure, serves as an important intermediate to other forms of MnO(2), and is believed to be responsible for the initial formation of MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures. A rolling mechanism has been proposed based on the results of the series of TEM images and XRD patterns of the intermediate.

Abstract Great attention has been focused on the design of electrocatalysts to enable electrochemical water splitting—a technology that allows energy derived from renewable resources to be stored in readily accessible and non-polluting chemical fuels. Herein we report a bifunctional nanotube-array electrode for water splitting in alkaline electrolyte. The electrode requires the overpotentials of 58 mV and 184 mV for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions respectively, meanwhile maintaining remarkable long-term durability. The prominent performance is due to the systematic optimization of chemical composition and geometric structure principally—that is, abundant electrocatalytic active sites, excellent conductivity of metallic 1T’ MoS 2 , synergistic effects among iron, cobalt, nickel ions, and the superaerophobicity of electrode surface for fast mass transfer. The electrode is also demonstrated to function as anode and cathode, simultaneously, delivering 10 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.429 V. Our results demonstrate substantial improvement in the design of high-efficiency electrodes for water electrolysis.

Imaging membranes in live cells with nanometer-scale resolution promises to reveal ultrastructural dynamics of organelles that are essential for cellular functions. In this work, we identified photoswitchable membrane probes and obtained super-resolution fluorescence images of cellular membranes. We demonstrated the photoswitching capabilities of eight commonly used membrane probes, each specific to the plasma membrane, mitochondria, the endoplasmic recticulum (ER) or lysosomes. These small-molecule probes readily label live cells with high probe densities. Using these probes, we achieved dynamic imaging of specific membrane structures in living cells with 30–60 nm spatial resolution at temporal resolutions down to 1–2 s. Moreover, by using spectrally distinguishable probes, we obtained two-color super-resolution images of mitochondria and the ER. We observed previously obscured details of morphological dynamics of mitochondrial fusion/fission and ER remodeling, as well as heterogeneous membrane diffusivity on neuronal processes.

It's a small world! The hydrothermal synthesis of a family of lanthanide hydroxide single-crystal nanowires has been achieved (see picture), the properties and dimensions of which can be tailored by changes in chemical potential and the pH value of the reaction media. Such materials might serve as templates for biological labeling agents, as one of many potential applications.

Assembly of single layers: Three-dimensional assembly of single-layered MoS2 is achieved on a large scale via a solution method. The as-prepared tubular architectures have tunable size and mesopores in the shell, which are desirable for applications. As a example, they exhibit excellent lithium storage properties and are highly active for hydrodesulfurization of thiophene resulting from their structural advantages.

SnO2 quantum dots (QDs) and ultrathin nanowires (NWs) with diameters of approximately 0.5-2.5 and approximately 1.5-4.5 nm, respectively, were controllably synthesized in a simple solution system. They are supposed to be ideal models for studying the continuous evolution of the quantum-confinement effect in SnO2 1D --> 0D systems. The observed transition from strong to weak quantum confinement in SnO2 QDs and ultrathin NWs is interpreted through the use of the Brus effective-mass approximation and the Nosaka finite-depth well model. Photoluminescence properties that were coinfluenced by size effects, defects (oxygen vacancies), and surface capping are discussed in detail. With the SnO2 QDs as building blocks, various 2D porous structures with ordered hexagonal, distorted hexagonal, and square patterns were prepared on silicon-wafer surfaces and exhibited optical features of 2D photonic crystals and enhanced gas sensitivity.
