Dr. Bandyopadhyay is a Research Engineer at Houston Methodist Research Institute. He is working on developing 3D printed patient-specific devices for aiding in surgical remediation of soft tissue defects and breast tissue reconstruction in a collaborative team at Houston Methodist. Dr. Ashutosh Bandyopadhyay earned his PhD from the prestigious Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG). He has been mentored by Prof. Biman B. Mandal at IITG. Ashutosh explored fascinating topics like Biomaterials, 3D Printing/Bioprinting, Biotechniques, and Tissue Engineering & Stem Cells.
His doctoral research involved creating 3D printed knee meniscus tissue constructs using hydrogel blend biomaterial-inks. These constructs, made of silk-fibroin and other polymers, hold promise for treating meniscus injuries. He has published several high-impact publications pertaining to the development of bioinks for 3D printing and bioprinting applications and has worked on injectable hydrogels, electrospinning and conventional scaffold fabrication as well.
He completed his Master of Technology in Biomedical Engineering at the School of Biomedical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology BHU. Working under the mentorship of Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Mahto, he specialized in Tissue Engineering, 3D bioprinting and Biomaterials. His master’s thesis project focused on developing a customized mechanical micro-extrusion 3D bioprinter and optimizing a gelatin-alginate bioink. This ingenious system allowed facile bioprinting of skeletal muscle cell-laden constructs.
His foundation in Biomedical Engineering was laid during his Bachelor of Technology studies at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Raipur, where he explored courses like Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering, and Microcontrollers. He explored the field of embedded systems and developed a low-cost spirometer for his bachelor's project. He has done his schooling from D.A.V. Public School, Bilaspur.​
