Purpose (the aim of the study): Chondrocalcinosis (CC) describe an opacity of the joint space compartments seen on knee radiographs, which predominantly represents the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) crystals. Previous population studies observed that knee CC is a possible risk factor for knee osteoarthritis (OA). Therefore, investigating CC etiology might provide new insight into OA prevention. Previous evidence suggests that CPP deposition has a clear heritable component. However, no genome-wide association study (GWAS) has been done on CC to identify risk loci.
