Ion-neutral reactions are driving the formation of small molecules in the gas phase of interstellar clouds, where hydrogen molecules and their ions are by far the most important collision partners for any species in the astrochemical network. Here we present absolute rate coefficient measurements for the reactions <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><a:mrow><a:msup><a:mrow><a:mi>HD</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mo>+</a:mo></a:msup><a:mo>+</a:mo><a:mi mathvariant="normal">C</a:mi><a:mspace width="0.16em"/><a:mo>→</a:mo><a:mspace width="0.16em"/><a:msup><a:mrow><a:mi>CH</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mo>+</a:mo></a:msup><a:mo>/</a:mo><a:msup><a:mrow><a:mi>CD</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mo>+</a:mo></a:msup><a:mo>+</a:mo><a:mrow><a:mi mathvariant="normal">D</a:mi><a:mo>/</a:mo><a:mi mathvariant="normal">H</a:mi></a:mrow></a:mrow></a:math> and <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><g:mrow><g:msubsup><g:mi mathvariant="normal">H</g:mi><g:mn>3</g:mn><g:mo>+</g:mo></g:msubsup><g:mo>+</g:mo><g:mi mathvariant="normal">C</g:mi><g:mspace width="0.16em"/><g:mo>→</g:mo><g:msup><g:mrow><g:mspace width="0.222222em"/><g:mi>CH</g:mi></g:mrow><g:mo>+</g:mo></g:msup><g:mo>/</g:mo><g:msubsup><g:mi>CH</g:mi><g:mn>2</g:mn><g:mo>+</g:mo></g:msubsup><g:mspace width="0.16em"/><g:mo>+</g:mo><g:msub><g:mi mathvariant="normal">H</g:mi><g:mn>2</g:mn></g:msub><g:mo>/</g:mo><g:mi mathvariant="normal">H</g:mi></g:mrow></g:math> obtained using a recently commissioned ion-neutral collision setup at the Cryogenic Storage Ring. Our measurements with vibrationally cold ions result in significantly higher rate coefficients when compared with previous studies using internally excited ions, bringing them in better agreement with classical capture theories. Moreover, we have performed detailed quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) calculations for the <o:math xmlns:o="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><o:mrow><o:msup><o:mrow><o:mi>HD</o:mi></o:mrow><o:mo>+</o:mo></o:msup><o:mo>+</o:mo><o:mi mathvariant="normal">C</o:mi></o:mrow></o:math> reaction, using new potential energy surfaces. Our experimental results and the QCT calculations show very good agreement for the absolute cross section of the reactions, as well as for the isotope effect. These results have great potential relevance for the chemistry of the interstellar medium and the onset of organic chemistry in space. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
