Combination treatments with agents that inhibit protease and reverse transcriptase of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) decrease mortality and slow disease progression.1 The development of resistance to these drugs, however, limits the benefit of such treatments.2,3 There have been reports of the transmission of HIV-1 variants that are resistant to nucleoside and non-nucleoside inhibitors of reverse transcriptase.4–9 The transmission of HIV-1 variants that are resistant to protease inhibitors could represent an important emerging clinical and public health problem.
