The possibility of the realization of a chaotic inflationary scenario is investigated in curved spacetime in which the inflaton couples nonminimally with the spacetime curvature such as (1/2\ensuremath{\xi}R${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{2}$. It is found that the coupling effect prevents the scenario from working unless \ensuremath{\xi} is at least smaller than ${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$ or negative.
