Noncovalent interactions between π systems are determined by electrostatic factors, as Cozzi, Siegel, et al. have recently shown: thus, interactions between two aromatic rings in a face-to-face stacked geometry (see below) are most favorable when both rings have acceptor substituents A, and least favorable when both have donor substituents D. This implies that charge transfer or electron donor acceptor effects are negligible.
