Abstract Global water security is one of humanities greatest challenges, yet it also represents an opportunity to catalyze transformative change. The very properties of water security that make it difficult to address also introduce potential for it to connect global agendas like climate change mitigation and adaptation planning and the sustainable development goals. We show that intergovernmental and scientific global agendas on water already embody this sentiment and highlight opportunities to better connect these agendas to accelerate action on water.
