Electrocatalysis technology can help to realize low-carbon economy and clean production, thus becoming a universally recognized focus of attention in the international community today. In practical applications, the efficiency of most electrocatalytic systems is determined by the performance of the catalyst. Two-dimensional nanomaterials exhibit immense application potential in electrocatalysis field due to their high specific surface area, abundant active sites and unique electronic states. Rare earth elements, with their distinctive 4f orbital electronic structure, can effectively modulate the active site state and electron transport capability of catalytic materials, providing a novel perspective for the optimization of two-dimensional catalytic materials. In recent years, an increasing number of rare earth-based two-dimensional nanomaterials have emerged and demonstrated advantages in the field of electrocatalysis. In this review, the design concept, synthesis method and application of rare earth based two-dimensional nanomaterials in various electrocatalytic processes are discussed. On this basis, the current challenges and the future development direction of rare earth-based two-dimentional nanoscale electrocatalytic materials were summarized.
