Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is characterized by the sustained activation of interstitial fibroblasts leading to excessive collagen deposition and progressive organ failure. Epigenetic and metabolic abnormalities have been shown to contribute to the persistent activated state of scar-forming fibroblasts.
