Abstract Astragaleae is one of the largest tribes in the legume family, harboring the most species‐rich genus in Angiosperm, Astragalus . The tribal and generic delimitation of Astragaleae remains unclear. With samples from 19 genera/dubious genera of the tribe represented by 272 species, as well as with nuclear and chloroplast data, we re‐delimited and described the tribe based on the Erophaca‐ Astragalean clade. We recognized 16 genera within Astragaleae: Astragalus , Biserrula , Carmichaelia , Clianthus , Colutea , Eremosparton , Erophaca , Lessertia , Montigena , Oxytropis , Phyllolobium , Podlechiella , Smirnowia , Sphaerophysa , Streblorrhiza , and Swainsona , and a generic key was proposed. Our results may lay a foundation for future studies on the taxonomy and biogeography of Astragaleae, and deepen the public's understanding of angiosperm diversity.
