What are the effects of the “Climate Emergency” declaration?

Climate Emergency:

Although the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has provided a globally peer-reviewed report about the role of human activities in climate change, the report was categorical in its conclusion: climate change is a fact, and human activities, primarily the release of pollutants in form gases from burning fossil fuel are responsible for its development.

The planet is in a climate mode and people need to put into high gear. The amount of GHG released due to the burning of fossil fuels is sufficient enough and alter our climate.

Each extra fraction of a degree of warming beyond 1.5°C will carry increasing dangers to lives, food sources, and livelihoods as well as local economies across the world.

We are in a climate emergency because our climate changes faster than nature can adjust to it, including us. We have little time to prevent global temperatures from rising beyond a threshold that the Earth can come back from, therefore immediate action is necessary.

Climate emergency politics can undermine climate justice:

In a research article Osborne et al. reported that “In recent years, eco-activist groups, academics, industry groups, governments, and other organizations have called for or declared a climate emergency. These declarations offer discursive and political consent for emergency climate actions.”

Without refuting the urgent need to take meaningful action to limit and adapt to climate change, emergency declarations can have effects that may ultimately work against climate justice.

Declarations of emergency are not only ineffective tools in the pursuit of climate justice but may be actively dangerous.
