Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling 2020 novel, Hamnet is not a traditional biopic of William Shakespeare. It is a sensory, atmospheric dive into the domestic life of the man before he was "The Bard," and more importantly, the woman who anchored him.

The film follows the whirlwind, "steamy" courtship between a young, under-inspired Latin tutor, Will (Paul Mescal), and Agnes Hathaway (Jessie Buckley), a woman of the woods. While Will eventually seeks his fortune in the playhouses of London, Agnes remains in Stratford, raising their children. The pastoral peace is shattered when the bubonic plague enters their home, claiming their 11-year-old son, Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe), after he heroically tries to "trick death" to save his twin sister, Judith.

Agnes grieves through the earth—tending to her medicinal herbs and feeling her son's absence in the very air of Stratford.
Will grieves through the ink—retreating into the ghost stories of London to write a play that will ensure his son’s name lives forever.
