Laser-plasma interactions occur when high-intensity laser beams interact with matter, resulting in a range of physical phenomena, such as the acceleration of charged particles, the generation of high-energy radiation like x-rays and gamma rays, and even the production of electron-positron pairs. These interactions are critical for various applications, including medical imaging, radiation therapy, and advanced particle accelerators. However, the underlying processes are highly complex and often difficult to study experimentally due to the extreme conditions involved. Thus, simulations play a fundamental role in this field, allowing researchers to model these interactions accurately, predict new outcomes, and design experiments that can lead to innovative applications.

Marta introduces the concept of Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations, a computational technique specifically designed for simulating plasma behavior. In a PIC simulation, the plasma is represented by macroparticles—collections of real particles—each of which approximates the dynamics of many individual particles. This representation is essential because it allows researchers to efficiently simulate the behavior of large particle populations without tracking each particle individually. The core of the PIC method involves solving Maxwell's equations, which describe how electromagnetic fields interact with charged particles, on a structured grid in space.

As the simulation progresses, the electromagnetic fields produced by the charged particles affect their motion, while the movement of these particles, in turn, alters the electromagnetic fields. This mutual interaction leads to a self-consistent simulation of the plasma system. Additionally, the PIC method can incorporate various physical processes—such as ionization, collisions, photon emission, and electron-positron pair production—into the model. These enhancements enable the simulation to capture the complexities of real-world plasma interactions, making it a robust tool for researchers in this field.

The core of her research focuses on exploring the interaction of laser pulses with specially designed targets.
