The validity of (1-q) expansion and factorization approximations are analysedin the framework of Tsallis statistics. We employ exact expressions forclassical independent systems (harmonic oscillators) by considering theunnormalized and normalized constrainsts. We show that these approxiamtions cannot be accurate in the analysis of systems with many degrees of freedom.

We show how to coarse grain polymers in a good solvent as single particles,interacting with density-independent or density-dependent interactions. Theseinteractions can be between the centres of mass, the mid-points or end-pointsof the polymers. We also show how to extend these methods to polymers in poorsolvents and mixtures of polymers. Treating polymers as soft colloids cangreatly speed up the simulation of complex many-polymer systems, includingpolymer-colloid mixtures.

The thermodynamic stability condition (TSC) of Tsallis' entropy is revisited.As Ramshaw [Phys. Lett. A {\bf 198} (1995) 119] has already pointed out, theconcavity of Tsallis' entropy with respect to the internal energy is notsufficient to guarantee thermodynamic stability for all values of $q$ due tothe non-additivity of Tsallis' entropy. Taking account of the non-additivitythe differential form of the TSC for Tsallis entropy is explicitly derived. Itis shown that the resultant TSC for Tsallis' entropy is equivalent to thepositivity of the standard specific heat. These results are consistent with therelation between Tsallis and R\'enyi entropies.

We investigate compactifications of M-theory from $11\to 5\to 4$ dimensionsand discuss geometrical properties of 4-d moduli fields related to thestructure of 5-d theory. We study supersymmetry breaking by compactification ofthe fifth dimension and find that an universal superpotential is generated forthe axion-dilaton superfield $S$. The resulting theory has a vacuum with$ =1$, zero cosmological constant and a gravitino mass depending on the fifthradius as $m_{3/2} \sim R_5^{-2}/M_{Pl}$. We discuss phenomenological aspectsof this scenario, mainly the string unification and the decompactificationproblem.

The semi-classical spectrum of the Homogeneous sine-Gordon theoriesassociated with an arbitrary compact simple Lie group G is obtained and shownto be entirely given by solitons. These theories describe quantum integrablemassive perturbations of Gepner's G-parafermions whose classicalequations-of-motion are non-abelian affine Toda equations. One-solitonsolutions are constructed by embeddings of the SU(2) complex sine-Gordonsoliton in the regular SU(2) subgroups of G. The resulting spectrum exhibitsboth stable and unstable particles, which is a peculiar feature shared with thespectrum of monopoles and dyons in N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories.

We propose a supergravity inspired derivation of a Randall-Sundrum's typeaction as an effective description of the dynamics of a brane coupled to thebulk through gravity only. The cosmological constants in the bulk and on thebrane appear at the classical level when solving the equations of motiondescribing the bosonic sector of supergravities in ten and eleven dimensionscoupled to the brane. They are related to physical quantities like the braneelectric charge and thus inherit some of their physical properties. The mostappealing property is their quantization: in d_\perp extra dimensions,Lambda_brane goes like N and Lambda_bulk like N^{2/(2-d_perp)}. This dynamicalorigin also explains the apparent fine-tuning required in the Randall-Sundrumscenario. In our approach, the cosmological constants are derived parametersand cannot be chosen arbitrarily; instead they are determined by the underlyingLagrangian. Some of the branes we construct that support cosmological constantin the bulk have supersymmetric properties: D3-branes of type IIB superstringtheory provide an explicit example.

We prove that the wreath product orbifolds studied earlier by the firstauthor provide a large class of higher dimensional examples of orbifolds whoseorbifold Hodge numbers coincide with the ordinary ones of suitable resolutionsof singularities. We also make explicit conjectures on elliptic genera for thewreath product orbifolds.

For a class of partial differential algebraic equations (PDAEs) ofquasi-linear type which include nonlinear terms of convection type apossibility to determine a time and spatial index is considered. As a typicalexample we investigate an application from plasma physics. Especially wediscuss the numerical solution of initial boundary value problems by means of acorresponding finite difference splitting procedure which is a modification ofa well known fractional step method coupled with a matrix factorization. Theconvergence of the numerical solution towards the exact solution of thecorresponding initial boundary value problem is investigated. Some results of anumerical solution of the plasma PDAE are given.

We study the Higgs sector of a SO(10) grand unified theory which predictsexact conservation of R-parity at all scales and incorporates the see-sawmechanism. We find possible intermediate scales and light states compatiblewith the constraints coming from the running of the gauge couplings. Such apattern could lower the SO(10) breaking scale, allowing the d=6 proton decayoperators to be comparable in magnitude to the d=5 ones.
