High-quality epitaxial MgB2 thin films prepared by pulsed laser depositionwith Tc = 39 K offer the opportunity to study the anisotropy and robustness ofthe superconducting state in magnetic fields. We measure the in-planeelectrical resistivity of the films in magnetic fields to 60T and estimate thesuperconducting upper critical field Hc(0) = 24 +- 3 T for field oriented alongthe c-axis, and Hab(0) = 30 +- 2 T for field in the plane of the film. We findthe zero-temperature coherence lengths xi_c(0) = 30 A and xi_ab(0) = 37 A to beshorter than the calculated electronic mean free path l = 100 +- 50 A, whichplaces our films in the clean limit. The observation of such large uppercritical fields from clean limit samples, coupled with the relatively smallanisotropy, provides strong evidence of the viability of MgB2 as atechnologically important superconductor.

The hysteresis properties of ferromagnetic materials at low field aredescribed by the Rayleigh law. We analyze the problem in light of modernstatistical mechanics models of hysteresis. In particular, we compute thedemagnetization curve and derive the Rayleigh parameters a and b in therandom-field Ising model and in a model of domain wall depinning. In therandom-field Ising model the Rayleigh law is obeyed only in the disorderdominated phase, while in the low disorder phase it is not possible todemagnetize the sample. This approach allows us to link a and b tomicrostructural parameters, such as the domain wall energy, the internaldisorder or the exchange interactions. Finally, our results are compared withexperiments.

The resistance of CPP spin valve is a continuous function of the angle$\theta $ between the magnetizations of both ferromagnets. We use the cicuittheory for non-collinear magnetoelectronics to compute the angularmagnetoresistance of CPP spin valves taking the spin accumulation in theferromagnetic layers into account.

The excitation spectrum of the 2-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg ladder is examinedperturbatively. Using an optimally chosen continuous unitary transformation weexpand the Hamiltonian and the Raman operator about the limit of isolated rungsleading to high order series expansions allowing to calculate spectraldensities quantitatively. The 2-particle sector is examined for total momentumk=0. We show that triplet-triplet interaction gives rise to a band splitting.

A comparative study of the magnetic remanence exhibited by tridimensionalJosephson junction arrays in response to an excitation with an AC magneticfield is presented. The observed temperature behavior of the remanence curvesfor disordered arrays fabricated from three different materials (Nb,YBa_2Cu_3O_7 and La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4) is found to follow the same universallaw (based on the explicit temperature expressions for the activation energyand the inductance-dominated contribution to the magnetization of the arraywithin the framework of the phase-slip model) regardless of the origin of thesuperconducting electrodes of the junctions which form the array.

We analyze the possibilities of pairing between two different fermion speciesin asymmetric matter at low density. While the direct interaction allowspairing only for very small asymmetries, the pairing mediated by polarizationeffects is always possible, with a pronounced maximum at finite asymmetry. Wepresent analytical results up to second order in the low-density parameter $k_Fa$.

Using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory we investigated the dependence ofthe magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconducting ringson their thickness. The size of this magnetic coupling increases with thethickness of the rings.

The small-x behavior of structure functions in the saturation region isdetermined by the non-linear generalization of the BFKL equation. I suggest theeffective field theory for the small-x evolution which solves formally thisequation. The result is the 2+1 functional integral for the structure functionsat small x.

We derive the coefficient of the O(alpha^2 log(s/m_e^2)) fixed ordercontribution to elastic large-angle Bhabha scattering. We adapt theclassification of infrared divergences, that was recently developed withindimensional regularization, and apply it to the regularization scheme with amassive photon and electron.

This talk summarizes results for all the scale independent renormalizationconstants for bilinear currents ($Z_A$, $Z_V$, and $Z_S/Z_P$), the improvementconstants ($c_A$, $c_V$, and $c_T$), the quark mass dependence of $Z_O$, andthe coefficients of the equation of motion operators for $O(a)$ improvedlattice QCD. Using data at $\beta=6.0$, 6.2 and 6.4 we study the scalingbehavior of these quantities and quantify residual discretization errors.
