We report on the existence of a hitherto undetected form of self-similarity, which we call extended self-similarity (ESS). ESS holds at high as well as at low Reynolds number, and it is characterized by the same scaling exponents of the velocity differences of fully developed turbulence.

An efficient strategy is developed for building suitable collision operators, to be used in a simplified version of the lattice gas Boltzmann equation. The resulting numerical scheme is shown to be linearly stable. The method is applied to the computation of the flow in a channel containing a periodic array of obstacles.

Complex fluid physics can be modeled using an extended kinetic (Boltzmann) equation in a more efficient way than using the continuum Navier-Stokes equations. Here, we explain this method for modeling fluid turbulence and show its effectiveness with the use of a computationally efficient implementation in terms of a discrete or "lattice" Boltzmann equation.

Ideal MHD restricts both the current and the pressure which can be stably confined in a Tokamak. A pressure profile optimisation is carried out for a variety of equilibria, which include JET and INTOR-like plasmas, in order to obtain the maximum β which can be stably confined at constant current. The current is limited to a value corresponding to a safety factor slightly above 2 at the plasma surface. A simple scaling law is found that fits well all the cases and which predicts a linear rise of 3 with the current.

We present a series of applications which demonstrate that the lattice Boltzmann equation is an adequate computational tool to address problems spanning a wide spectrum of fluid regimes, ranging from laminar to fully turbulent flows in two and three dimensions.

The physical behaviour of a class of mesoscopic models for multiphase flows is analyzed in details near interfaces. In particular, an extended pseudo-potential method is developed, which permits to tune the equation of state and surface tension independently of each other. The spurious velocity contributions of this extended model are shown to vanish in the limit of high grid refinement and/or high order isotropy. Higher order schemes to implement self-consistent forcings are rigorously computed for 2d and 3d models. The extended scenario developed in this work clarifies the theoretical foundations of the Shan-Chen methodology for the lattice Boltzmann method and enhances its applicability and flexibility to the simulation of multiphase flows to density ratios up to O(100).

It is shown that the lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) for a lattice gas provides a viable numerical method for the study of three-dimensional flows in complex geometries. Numerical results for low Reynolds number flows in a three-dimensional random medium are reported. The Darcy's law is recovered and a preliminary estimation of the permeability presented.

We argue that the boldest claims of Big Data are in need of revision and toning-down, in view of a few basic lessons learned from the science of complex systems. We point out that, once the most extravagant claims of Big Data are properly discarded, a synergistic merging of BD with big theory offers considerable potential to spawn a new scientific paradigm capable of overcoming some of the major barriers confronted by the modern scientific method originating with Galileo. These obstacles are due to the presence of nonlinearity, nonlocality and hyperdimensions which one encounters frequently in multiscale modelling.

Abstract The ribosome stalling mechanism is a crucial biological process; yet its atomistic underpinning is still elusive. In this framework, the XBP1u translational arrest peptide (AP) plays a central role in regulating the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) in eukaryotic cells. Here, we report multi-microseconds all atom molecular dynamics simulations designed to probe the interactions between the XBP1u AP and the mammalian ribosome exit tunnel, both for the wild type AP and for four mutant variants of different arrest potency. Enhanced sampling simulations allow investigating the AP release process of the different variants shedding light on this complex mechanism. The present outcomes are in qualitative/quantitative agreement with available experimental data. In conclusion, we provide an unprecedented atomistic picture of this biological process and clear-cut insights into the key AP-ribosome interactions.
