Manifestation of multiband optical properties of MgB$_2$
Claire Planner
et al.
Jul 4, 2001
The optical conductivity of MgB$_2$ has been determined on a densepolycrystalline sample in the spectral range 6 meV - 4.6 eV using a combinationof ellipsometric and normal incidence reflectivity measurements.$\sigma_{1}(\omega)$ features a narrow Drude peak with anomalously small plasmafrequency (1.4 eV) and a very broad "dome" structure, which comprises the bulkof the low-energy spectral weight. This fact can be reconciled with the resultsof band structure calculations by assuming that charge carriers from the 2D$\sigma$-bands and the 3D $\pi$-bands have principally different impurityscattering rates and negligible interband scattering. This also explains asurprisingly small correlation between the defect concentration and $T_c$,expected for a two-gap superconductor. The large 3D carrier scattering ratesuggests their proximity to the localization limit.

Anomalous Levy decoherence
Robert H. Schneider
et al.
Jul 16, 2001
We investigate the decoherence of a small quantum system weakly coupled to acomplex, chaotic environment when the dynamics is not Gaussian but Levyanomalous. By studying the time dependence of the linear entropy and thedamping of the interference of two Gaussian wave packets in the Wignerrepresentation, we show that the decoherence time for a quantum Levy stableprocess is always smaller than for Gaussian diffusion.
