We discuss the rich vibrational dynamics of nanometer-scale semiconductingand insulating crystals as probed by localized electronic impurity states, withan emphasis on nanoparticles that are only weakly coupled to their environment.Two principal regimes of electron-phonon dynamics are distinguished, and abrief survey of vibrational-mode broadening mechanisms is presented. Recentwork on the effects of mechanical interaction with the environment isdiscussed.

A computer simulation model is used to study the density profile and flow ofa miscible gaseous fluid mixture consisting of differing constituent masses($m_A = m_B/3$) through an open matrix. The density profile is found to decaywith the height $\propto \exp(-m_{A(B)}h)$, consistent with the barometricheight law. The flux density shows a power-law increase $\propto{(p_c-p)}^{\mu}$ with $\mu \simeq 2.3$ at the porosity $1-p$ above the porepercolation threshold $1-p_c$

We discuss type I -- heterotic duality in four-dimensional models obtained asa Coulomb phase of the six-dimensional U(16) orientifold model compactified onT^2 with arbitrary SU(16) Wilson lines. We show that Kahler potentials, gaugethreshold corrections and the infinite tower of higher derivative F-terms agreein the limit that corresponds to weak coupling, large T^2 heteroticcompactifications. On the type I side, all these quantities are completelydetermined by the spectrum of N=2 BPS states that originate from D=6 masslesssuperstring modes.
