Abstract The fundamental value of universal nomenclatural systems in biology is that they enable unambiguous scientific communication. However, the stability of these systems is threatened by recent discussions asking for a fairer nomenclature, raising the possibility of bulk revision processes for “inappropriate” names. It is evident that such proposals come from very deep feelings, but we show how they can irreparably damage the foundation of biological communication and, in turn, the sciences that depend on it. There are four essential consequences of objective codes of nomenclature: universality, stability, neutrality, and transculturality. These codes provide fair and impartial guides to the principles governing biological nomenclature and allow unambiguous universal communication in biology. Accordingly, no subjective proposals should be allowed to undermine them.

The family Psychodidae (Diptera) is recorded for the oceanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, represented by two genera and three species: Clogmia albipunctata Williston, Psychoda buxoides Quate, P. savaiiensis Edwards, as well as an undetermined species belonging to the tribe Pericomaini. The fauna of Psychodidae in Fernando de Noronha is remarkably inferior to the Brazilian continental fauna, including species known as cosmopolitan due to the introduction into the most varied environments by human action. An identification key for the Psychodidae of Fernando de Noronha is given, and an overview of the records of Psychodidae for volcanic islands worldwide is also provided.

Five new species of Neurostigma collected in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest are described and illustrated: Neurostigma alfonsoi sp. nov., N. patriciae sp. nov., N. angelicum sp. nov., N. spinosum sp. nov. and N. willkeniae sp. nov. The first record of Neurostigma for the Brazilian state of Rondônia is included, along with an unpdated distribution map of male specimens of Neurostigma. An updated identification key of males of the genus is provided. Now, the number of species of Neurostigma recorded for Brazil has increased to 12, with two of them also occurring in Colombia. With this study, we significantly contributed to the knowledge of the diversity of the genus, which increased to 19 species.

Anapolisia Piza, 1980 is placed in Microcentrini Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae, Phaneropterinae) and currently comprises six species with distribution from Costa Rica to southern Brazil. In this work, the review of Anapolisia is provided, with a description of 19 new species and Anapolisia planiceps (Walker, 1869) nov. comb. was transferred from Ischyra Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878; the revalidation of Tropicophyllum Koçak & Kemal, 2008 stat. rev., with a description of 12 new species and new combinations for four species: Tropicophyllum colosseum (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878) comb. nov., Tropicophyllum maculosum (Bowen-Jones, 2000) comb. nov., Tropicophyllum sentum (Grant, 1958) comb. nov. and Tropicophyllum zonatum (Giglio-Tos, 1898) comb. nov. Pictorial keys for species, maps and observations of natural history are provided.
