Manifestation of multiband optical properties of MgB$_2$
Claire Planner
et al.
Jul 4, 2001
The optical conductivity of MgB$_2$ has been determined on a densepolycrystalline sample in the spectral range 6 meV - 4.6 eV using a combinationof ellipsometric and normal incidence reflectivity measurements.$\sigma_{1}(\omega)$ features a narrow Drude peak with anomalously small plasmafrequency (1.4 eV) and a very broad "dome" structure, which comprises the bulkof the low-energy spectral weight. This fact can be reconciled with the resultsof band structure calculations by assuming that charge carriers from the 2D$\sigma$-bands and the 3D $\pi$-bands have principally different impurityscattering rates and negligible interband scattering. This also explains asurprisingly small correlation between the defect concentration and $T_c$,expected for a two-gap superconductor. The large 3D carrier scattering ratesuggests their proximity to the localization limit.

3.5 keV X-ray Line Signal from Decay of Right-Handed Neutrino due to Transition Magnetic Moment
Jean-Philippe Gratton
et al.
Apr 14, 2014
We consider the dark matter model with radiative neutrino mass generationwhere the Standard Model is extended with three right-handed singlet neutrinos($N_1$, $N_2$ and $N_3$) and one additional SU(2)$_L$ doublet scalar $\eta$.One of the right-handed neutrinos ($N_1$), being lightest among them, is aleptophilic fermionic dark matter candidate whose stability is ensured by theimposed $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry on this model. The second lightest right-handedneutrino ($N_2$) is assumed to be nearly degenerated with the lightest oneenhancing the co-annihilation between them. The effective interaction termamong the lightest, second lightest right-handed neutrinos and photoncontaining transition magnetic moment is responsible for the decay of heavierright-handed neutrino to the lightest one and a photon ($N_2\to N_1 + \gamma$).This radiative decay of heavier right-handed neutrino %to the the lightest onewith charged scalar and leptons in internal lines could explain the X-ray linesignal $\sim$ $3.5$ keV recently claimed by XMM-Newton X-ray observatory fromdifferent galaxy clusters and Andromeda galaxy (M31). The value of thetransition magnetic moment is computed and found to be several orders ofmagnitude below the current reach of various direct dark matter searches. Theother parameter space in this framework in the light of the observed signal isfurther investigated.

Trapped Atomic Fermi Gases
Petra Boynton
et al.
Dec 20, 2001
A many-body system of fermion atoms with a model interaction characterized bythe scattering length $a$ is considered. We treat both $a$ and the density asparameters assuming that the system can be created artificially in a trap. If$a$ is negative the system becomes strongly correlated at densities $\rho \sim|a|^{-3}$, provided the scattering length is the dominant parameter of theproblem. It means that we consider $|a|$ to be much bigger than the radius ofthe interaction or any other relevant parameter of the system. The density$\rho_{c1}$ at which the compressibility vanishes is defined by $\rho_{c1}\sim|a|^{-3}$. Thus, a system composed of fermion atoms with the scattering length$a\to -\infty$ is completely unstable at low densities, inevitably collapsinguntil the repulsive core stops the density growth. As a result, any Fermisystem possesses the equilibrium density and energy if the bareparticle-particle interaction is sufficiently strong to make $a$ negative andto be the dominant parameter. This behavior can be realized in a trap. Ourresults show that a low density neutron matter can have the equilibriumdensity.

Neutrino masses and mixings in SO(10)
Robert H. Schneider
et al.
Nov 4, 1999
Assuming a Zee-like matrix for the right-handed neutrino Majorana masses inthe see-saw mechanism, one gets maximal mixing for vacuum solar oscillations, avery small value for $U_{e3}$ and an approximate degeneracy for the two lowerneutrino masses. The scale of right-handed neutrino Majorana masses is in goodagreement with the value expected in a SO(10) model with Pati-Salam $SU(4)\tsSU(2)\ts SU(2)$ intermediate symmetry.

Landau Levels as a Limiting Case of a Model with the Morse-Like Magnetic Field
Emily Stockings
et al.
Apr 15, 2014
We consider the quantum mechanics of an electron trapped on an infinite bandalong the $x$-axis in the presence of the Morse-like perpendicular magneticfield $\vec{B}=-B_{0}e^{-\frac{2\pi}{a_{0}}x}\hat{k}$ with $B_{0}>0$ as aconstant strength and $a_{0}$ as the width of the band. It is shown that thesquare integrable pure states realize representations of $su(1,1)$ algebra viathe quantum number corresponding to the linear momentum in the $y$-direction.The energy of the states increases by decreasing the width $a_{0}$ while it isnot changed by $B_{0}$. It is quadratic in terms of two quantum numbers, andthe linear spectrum of the Landau levels is obtained as a limiting case of$a_{0}\rightarrow\infty$. All of the lowest states of the $su(1,1)$representations minimize uncertainty relation and the minimizing of theirsecond and third states is transformed to that of the Landau levels in thelimit $a_{0}\rightarrow\infty$. The compact forms of the Barut-Girardellocoherent states corresponding to $l$-representation of $su(1,1)$ algebra andtheir positive definite measures on the complex plane are also calculated.

Real time assimilation of HF radar currents into a coastal ocean model
Emily Stockings
et al.
Sep 28, 2012
A real time assimilation and forecasting system for coastal currents ispresented. The purpose of the system is to deliver current analyses andforecasts based on assimilation of high frequency radar surface currentmeasurements. The local Vessel Traffic Service monitoring the ship traffic totwo oil terminals on the coast of Norway received the analyses and forecasts inreal time. A new assimilation method based on optimal interpolation is presented wherespatial covariances derived from an ocean model are used instead of simplifiedmathematical formulations. An array of high frequency radar antennae providethe current measurements. A suite of nested ocean models comprise the modelsystem. The observing system is found to yield good analyses and short rangeforecasts that are significantly improved compared to a model twin withoutassimilation. The system is fast; analysis and six hour forecasts are ready atthe Vessel Traffic Service 45 minutes after acquisition of radar measurements.

Bose-Fermi competition in holographic metals
Yan Liu
et al.
Jul 17, 2013
We study the holographic dual of a finite density system with both bosonicand fermionic degrees of freedom. There is no evidence for a universalbose-dominated ground state. Instead, depending on the relative conformalweights the preferred groundstate is either pure AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom, aholographic superconductor, an electron star, or a novel mixed state that isbest characterized as a hairy electron star.

Implementation of Conditional Phase Shift gate for Quantum Information Processing by NMR, using Transition-selective pulses
Petra Boynton
et al.
Nov 16, 2003
Experimental realization of quantum information processing in the field ofnuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been well established. Implementation ofconditional phase shift gate has been a significant step, which has lead torealization of important algorithms such as Grover's search algorithm andquantum Fourier transform. This gate has so far been implemented in NMR byusing coupling evolution method. We demonstrate here the implementation of theconditional phase shift gate using transition selective pulses. As anapplication of the gate, we demonstrate Grover's search algorithm and quantumFourier transform by simulations and experiments using transition selectivepulses.
