Transition metal (TM) atoms bound to fullerenes are proposed as adsorbents for high density, room temperature, ambient pressure storage of hydrogen. C60 or C48B12 disperses TMs by charge transfer interactions to produce stable organometallic buckyballs (OBBs). A particular scandium OBB can bind as many as 11 hydrogen atoms per TM, ten of which are in the form of dihydrogen that can be adsorbed and desorbed reversibly. In this case, the calculated binding energy is about 0.3 eV/H(2), which is ideal for use on board vehicles. The theoretical maximum retrievable H2 storage density is approximately 9 wt %.

This technoeconomic analysis shows that perovskite solar cells can emerge as a cost leader in photovoltaic power generation.

After rapid progress over the past five years, organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) currently exhibit photoconversion efficiencies comparable to the best commercially available photovoltaic technologies. However, instabilities in the materials and devices, primarily due to reactions with water, have kept PSCs from entering the marketplace. Here, laser beam induced current imaging is used to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of the quantum efficiency of perovskite solar cells under controlled humidity conditions. Several interesting mechanistic aspects are revealed as the degradation proceeds along a four‐stage process. Three of the four stages can be reversed, while the fourth stage leads to irreversible decomposition of the photoactive perovskite material. A series of reactions in the PbI 2 ‐CH 3 NH 3 I‐H 2 O system explains the interplay between the interactions with water and the overall stability. Understanding of the degradation mechanisms of PSCs on a microscopic level gives insight into improving the long‐term stability.

Electrodes with electrochemical dimensions as small as 10 angstroms have been fabricated and used for electrochemical studies. These nanometer-scale electrodes have enabled the measurement of electron-transfer rate constants, k(het), that are two orders of magnitude faster than k(het) values accessible with any other electrochemical method.

First-principles density functional and quantum Monte Carlo calculations of light-element doped fullerenes reveal significantly enhanced molecular ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ binding for substitutional B and Be. A nonclassical three-center binding mechanism between the dopant and ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ is identified, which is maximized when the empty ${p}_{z}$ orbital of the dopant is highly localized. The calculated binding energies of $0.2--0.6\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}/{\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ is suited for reversible hydrogen storage at near standard conditions. The calculated ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ sorption process is barrierless, which could also significantly simplify the kinetics for the storage.

We present a comprehensive study of the optical and electrical properties of transparent conductive films made from precisely tuned ratios of metallic and semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes. The conductivity and transparency of the SWNT films are controlled by an interplay between localized and delocalized carriers, as determined by the SWNT electronic structure, tube−tube junctions, and intentional and unintentional redox dopants. The results suggest that the main resistance in the SWNT thin films is the resistance associated with tube−tube junctions. Redox dopants are found to increase the delocalized carrier density and transmission probability through intertube junctions more effectively for semiconductor-enriched films than for metal-enriched films. As a result, redox-doped semiconductor-enriched films are more conductive than either intrinsic or redox-doped metal-enriched films.
