Three-dimensional porous crystalline polyimide covalent organic frameworks (termed PI-COFs) have been synthesized. These PI-COFs feature non- or interpenetrated structures that can be obtained by choosing tetrahedral building units of different sizes. Both PI-COFs show high thermal stability (>450 °C) and surface area (up to 2403 m(2) g(-1)). They also show high loading and good release control for drug delivery applications.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of porous crystalline polymers with a wide variety of applications. They are currently synthesized through only a few chemical reactions, limiting the access and exploitation of new structures and properties. Here we report that the imidization reaction can be used to prepare a series of polyimide (PI) COFs with pore size as large as 42 × 53 Å2, which is among the largest reported to date, and surface area as high as 2,346 m2 g−1, which exceeds that of all amorphous porous PIs and is among the highest reported for two-dimensional COFs. These PI COFs are thermally stable up to 530 °C. We also assemble a large dye molecule into a COF that shows sensitive temperature-dependent luminescent properties. Covalent organic frameworks are a potentially useful class of materials, although they are currently synthesized using relatively few reactions. Here, the authors show that the imidization reaction can be used to prepare a series of large pore polyimide frameworks with high surface area and thermal stability.

Homogenously dispersed copper on layered solid base (Cu0.4/Mg5.6Al2O8.6-CP, with 80.1% dispersion of copper) was synthesized via thermal decomposition of the as-synthesized Cu0.4Mg5.6Al2(OH)16CO3 layered double hydroxides. This bi-functional highly dispersed Cu-solid base catalyst is extremely effective for hydrogenolysis of aqueous glycerol. The detected conversion of glycerol reached 80.0% with a 98.2% selectivity of 1,2-propanediol at 180 °C, 3.0 MPa H2 and 20 h. But copper dispersed poorly in those catalysts prepared via impregnation and ion-exchange, and their activities were lower. These precursors and catalysts were characterized by N2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscope, transmission electronic microscope, thermo-gravimetry, temperature-programmed reduction with H2, in-situ XRD, dissociative N2O adsorption and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption. It was confirmed that the as-synthesized Cu0.4Mg5.6Al2(OH)16CO3 showed a well crystallized layer-structure of hydrotalcite and copper dispersed homogenously on the layer-structure of hydrotalcite after thermal decomposition and H2 reduction.

A new protocol for photochemical perfluoroalkylation reactions using perfluoroalkyl iodide, amine additive, and THF solvent is reported. This protocol does not require a photoredox catalyst and proceeds at ambient temperature with irradiation from a compact fluorescent lamp, low-intensity UV lamp, or sunlight. This protocol can be applied to the synthesis of perfluoroalkyl-substituted phenanthridines as well as effect the iodo-perfluoroalkylation of alkenes/alkynes and the C-H perfluoroalkylation of electron-rich arenes and heteroarenes. This C-H perfluoroalkylation reaction offers a unique method for site-selective labeling of oligopeptides at the tryptophan residue.

A novel method is introduced for extracting and enriching Cd(II) and Pb(II) from edible oils using glutathione disulfide (GSSG) as both an extractant and a phase-separation agent. The ions in the oils were initially extracted into an aqueous solution containing GSSG. After mixing the solution with acetonitrile at the appropriate volume ratio, a new phase formed, resulting in enrichment of the analytes. The experimental conditions were optimized using response surface methodology with a central composite design. Under optimal conditions, the method offered a combined enrichment factor of >660, with combined extraction efficiencies of 84.31% and 83.35% for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Finally, the method was conjugated to capillary electrophoresis to determine Cd(II) and Pb(II) in edible oil samples, with detection limits of 0.45 and 1.24 ppb, respectively. In comparison to traditional approaches, the GSSG-based method demonstrates rapidity, efficiency, and recyclability in extracting heavy metal ions from complex matrices.
