Predictive control is a very wide class of controllers that have found rather recent application in the control of power converters. Research on this topic has been increased in the last years due to the possibilities of today's microprocessors used for the control. This paper presents the application of different predictive control methods to power electronics and drives. A simple classification of the most important types of predictive control is introduced, and each one of them is explained including some application examples. Predictive control presents several advantages that make it suitable for the control of power converters and drives. The different control schemes and applications presented in this paper illustrate the effectiveness and flexibility of predictive control.

This paper presents a comparative study between field-oriented control (FOC) and Predictive Torque Control (PTC) applied to induction machines. Both strategies are implemented on the same experimental bench and similar tests are performed. Furthermore, they were previously adjusted to get an equivalent switching frequency at a specific operation point, achieving the fairest possible comparison at steady state. Experimental results verify that PTC can achieve results similar to FOC, possibly even improving performance in transient conditions.

In this paper, an improved finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) with an optimized weighting factor is presented. The main goal of this paper is reducing the torque ripples when the FCS-MPC is implemented by means of the two-level inverter. For this purpose, the weighting factor is calculated via an optimization method. The optimization is based on dividing the control interval into two parts: active time for applying the active voltage vectors and zero time for applying the zero voltage. With this technique, the torque ripple is calculated as a function of weighting factor and it is optimized. The method is validated by simulations and experiments, using two-level inverter, at two speed regions (nominal speed and low speed). The results are compared with conventional FCS-MPC.

This paper proposes a control strategy of finite-control-set model predictive torque control (FCS-MPTC) with a deadbeat (DB) solution for permanent-magnet synchronous motor drives. By using a DB solution, the process of selection of the best switching vector is optimized. The predicted DB voltage sector consisting of the desired voltage vector (VV) avoids the complete enumeration for testing all feasible VVs, which relieves the big calculation effort of the traditional FCS-MPTC method. The proposed system is experimentally carried out both in the steady state and in the transient state.

Model-based predictive direct control methods are advanced control strategies in the field of power electronics. To control an induction machine (IM), the predictive torque control (PTC) method evaluates the electromagnetic torque and stator flux in the cost function. The switching vector selected for the use in the insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) minimizes the error between references and the predicted values. The system constraints can be easily included. The predictive current control (PCC) strategy assesses the stator current in the cost function. The weighting factor is not necessary. Both the PTC and PCC methods are very useful direct control methods that do not require the use of a modulator. In this paper, the PTC and PCC methods are carried out experimentally for an IM on the same test bench. The behaviors and the robustness in steady state and the performances in transient state are evaluated.

Model predictive control (MPC) has established itself as a promising control methodology in power electronics. This survey paper highlights the most relevant MPC techniques for power electronic systems. These can be classified into two major groups, namely, MPC without modulator, referred to as direct MPC, and MPC with a subsequent modulation stage, known as indirect MPC. Design choices, and parameters that affect the system performance, closed-loop stability, and controller robustness are discussed. Moreover, solvers, and control platforms that can be employed for the real-time implementation of MPC algorithms are presented. Finally, the MPC schemes in question are assessed, among others, in terms of design, and computational complexity, along with their performance, and applicability depending on the power electronic system at hand.

This paper proposes an alternative strategy of finite-control-set model-predictive torque control (MPTC) to reduce the computational burden and the torque ripple and decouple the switching frequency from the controller sampling time. An improved discrete space-vector modulation (DSVM) technique is utilized to synthesize a large number of virtual voltage vectors. The deadbeat (DB) technique is used to optimize the voltage vector selection process, avoiding enumerating all the feasible voltage vectors. With this proposed method, only three voltage vectors are tested in each predictive step. Based on the improved DSVM method, the three candidate voltage vectors are calculated by using a novel algebraic way. This new strategy has the benefits of both the MPTC method and the DB method. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated based on a test bench.

The application of model predictive control in electrical drives has been studied extensively in the past decade. This article presents what the authors consider the most relevant contributions published in the last years, mainly focusing on three relevant issues: weighting factor calculation when multiple objectives are utilized in the cost function, current/torque harmonic distortion optimization when the power converter switching frequency is reduced, and robustness improvement under parameters uncertainties. Therefore, this article aims to enable readers to have a more precise overview while facilitating their future research work in this exciting area.

Field oriented control (FOC), direct torque control (DTC) and finite set model predictive control (FS-MPC) are different strategies for high performance electrical drive systems. FOC uses linear controllers and pulse width modulation (PWM) to control the fundamental components of the load voltages. On the other hand, DTC and FS-MPC are nonlinear strategies that generate directly the voltage vectors in the absence of a modulator. This paper presents all three methods starting from theoretic operating principles, control structures and implementation. Experimental assessment is performed to discuss their advantages and limitations in detail. As main conclusions of this work, it is affirmed that different strategies have their own merits and all meet the requirements of modern high performance drives.

This paper presents a new and very simple strategy for torque and flux control of ac machines. The method is based on model predictive control and uses one cost function for the torque and a separate cost function for the flux. This strategy introduces a drastic simplification, achieving a very fast dynamic behavior in the controlled machines. Experimental results obtained with an induction machine confirm the drive's very good performance.
