We describe the synthesis of bilayer graphene thin films deposited on insulating silicon carbide and report the characterization of their electronic band structure using angle-resolved photoemission. By selectively adjusting the carrier concentration in each layer, changes in the Coulomb potential led to control of the gap between valence and conduction bands. This control over the band structure suggests the potential application of bilayer graphene to switching functions in atomic-scale electronic devices.

We present the science and technology roadmap for graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems, targeting an evolution in technology, that might lead to impacts and benefits reaching into most areas of society. This roadmap was developed within the framework of the European Graphene Flagship and outlines the main targets and research areas as best understood at the start of this ambitious project. We provide an overview of the key aspects of graphene and related materials (GRMs), ranging from fundamental research challenges to a variety of applications in a large number of sectors, highlighting the steps necessary to take GRMs from a state of raw potential to a point where they might revolutionize multiple industries. We also define an extensive list of acronyms in an effort to standardize the nomenclature in this emerging field.

The effectively massless, relativistic behaviour of graphene’s charge carriers—known as Dirac fermions—is a result of its unique electronic structure, characterized by conical valence and conduction bands that meet at a single point in momentum space (at the Dirac crossing energy). The study of many-body interactions amongst the charge carriers in graphene and related systems such as carbon nanotubes, fullerenes and graphite is of interest owing to their contribution to superconductivity and other exotic ground states in these systems. Here we show, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, that electron–plasmon coupling plays an unusually strong role in renormalizing the bands around the Dirac crossing energy—analogous to mass renormalization by electron–boson coupling in ordinary metals. Our results show that electron–electron, electron–plasmon and electron–phonon coupling must be considered on an equal footing in attempts to understand the dynamics of quasiparticles in graphene and related systems.

The unusual transport properties of graphene are the direct consequence of a peculiar band structure near the Dirac point. We determine the shape of the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ bands and their characteristic splitting, and find the transition from two-dimensional to bulk character for 1 to 4 layers of graphene by angle-resolved photoemission. By detailed measurements of the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ bands we derive the stacking order, layer-dependent electron potential, screening length, and strength of interlayer interaction by comparison with tight binding calculations, yielding a comprehensive description of multilayer graphene's electronic structure.

Optical Faraday rotation is one of the most direct and practically important manifestations of magnetically broken time-reversal symmetry. The rotation angle is proportional to the distance traveled by the light, and up to now sizeable effects were observed only in macroscopically thick samples and in two-dimensional electron gases with effective thicknesses of several nanometers. Here we demonstrate that a single atomic layer of carbon - graphene - turns the polarization by several degrees in modest magnetic fields. The rotation is found to be strongly enhanced by resonances originating from the cyclotron effect in the classical regime and the inter-Landau-level transitions in the quantum regime. Combined with the possibility of ambipolar doping, this opens pathways to use graphene in fast tunable ultrathin infrared magneto-optical devices.

We have studied friction and dissipation in single and bilayer graphene films grown epitaxially on SiC. The friction on SiC is greatly reduced by a single layer of graphene and reduced by another factor of 2 on bilayer graphene. The friction contrast between single and bilayer graphene arises from a dramatic difference in electron-phonon coupling, which we discovered by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Bilayer graphene as a lubricant outperforms even graphite due to reduced adhesion.

A hallmark of graphene is its unusual conical band structure that leads to a zero-energy band gap at a single Dirac crossing point. By measuring the spectral function of charge carriers in quasi-freestanding graphene with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we showed that at finite doping, this well-known linear Dirac spectrum does not provide a full description of the charge-carrying excitations. We observed composite "plasmaron" particles, which are bound states of charge carriers with plasmons, the density oscillations of the graphene electron gas. The Dirac crossing point is resolved into three crossings: the first between pure charge bands, the second between pure plasmaron bands, and the third a ring-shaped crossing between charge and plasmaron bands.

Epitaxial growth of graphene on SiC surfaces by solid state graphitization is a promising route for future development of graphene based electronics. In the present work, we have studied the morphology, atomic scale structure, and electronic structure of thin films of few-layer graphene (FLG) on SiC(0001) by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STS). We show that a quantitative evaluation of the roughness induced by the interface is a tool for determining the layer thickness of FLG. We present and interpret thickness dependent tunneling spectra, which can serve as an additional fingerprint for the determination of the layer thickness. By performing spatially resolved STS, we find evidence that the charge distribution in bilayer graphene is inhomogeneous.

The ultrafast dynamics of excited carriers in graphene is closely linked to the Dirac spectrum and plays a central role for many electronic and optoelectronic applications. Harvesting energy from excited electron-hole pairs, for instance, is only possible if these pairs can be separated before they lose energy to vibrations, merely heating the lattice. While the hot carrier dynamics in graphene could so far only be accessed indirectly, we here present a direct time-resolved view on the Dirac cone by angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). This allows us to show the quasi-instant thermalisation of the electron gas to a temperature of more than 2000 K; to determine the time-resolved carrier density; to disentangle the subsequent decay into excitations of optical phonons and acoustic phonons (directly and via supercollisions); and to show how the presence of the hot carrier distribution affects the lifetime of the states far below the Fermi energy.
