Raman spectroscopy is here shown to provide a powerful tool to differentiate between two different sp(2) carbon nanostructures (carbon nanotubes and graphene) which have many properties in common and others that differ. Emphasis is given to the richness of both carbon nanostructures as prototype examples of nanostructured materials. A glimpse toward future developments in this field is presented.

The electronic structure for graphene monolayer tubules is predicted as a function of the diameter and helicity of the constituent graphene tubules. The calculated results show that approximately 1/3 of these tubules are a one-dimensional metal which is stable against a Peierls distortion, and the other 2/3 are one-dimensional semiconductors. The implications of these results are discussed.

We show that the Raman scattering technique can give complete structural information for one-dimensional systems, such as carbon nanotubes. Resonant confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy of an (n,m) individual single-wall nanotube makes it possible to assign its chirality uniquely by measuring one radial breathing mode frequency omega(RBM) and using the theory of resonant transitions. A unique chirality assignment can be made for both metallic and semiconducting nanotubes of diameter d(t), using the parameters gamma(0) = 2.9 eV and omega(RBM) = 248/d(t). For example, the strong RBM intensity observed at 156 cm(-1) for 785 nm laser excitation is assigned to the (13,10) metallic chiral nanotube on a Si/SiO2 surface.

The electronic structures of some possible carbon fibers nucleated from the hemisphere of a ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ molecule are presented. A one-dimensional electronic band-structure model of such carbon fibers, having not only rotational symmetry but also screw axes, is derived by folding the two-dimensional energy bands of graphite. A simple tight-binding model shows that some fibers are metallic and are stable against perturbations of the one-dimensional energy bands and the mixing of \ensuremath{\sigma} and \ensuremath{\pi} bands due to the curvature of the circumference of the fiber.

A review is presented on the resonance Raman spectra from one isolated single wall carbon nanotube. The reasons why it is possible to observe the spectrum from only one nanotube are given and the important structural information that is provided by single nanotube spectroscopy is discussed. Emphasis is given to the new physics revealed by the various phonon features found in the single nanotube spectra and their connection to spectra observed for single wall nanotube bundles. The implications of this work on single wall carbon nanotube research generally are also indicated.

The fundamental relations governing the geometry of carbon nanotubes are reviewed, and explicit examples are presented. A framework is given for the symmetry properties of carbon nanotubes for both symmorphic and non-symmorphic tubules which have screw-axis symmetry. The implications of symmetry on the vibrational and electronic structure of 1D carbon nanotube systems are considered. The corresponding properties of double-wall nanotubes and arrays of nanotubes are also discussed.

The basic concepts and characteristics of Raman spectra from carbon nanotubes (both isolated and bundled) are presented. The general characteristics of the radial breathing mode, tangential mode (G band), disorder-induced mode (D-band) and other Raman features are presented, with the focus directed toward their use for carbon nanotube characterization. Polarization analysis, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and complementary optical techniques are also discussed in terms of their advantages and limitations.

The absence of back scattering in carbon nanotubes is shown to be ascribed to Berry's phase which corresponds to a sign change of the wave function under a spin rotation of a neutrino-like particle in a two-dimensional graphite. Effects of trigonal warping of the bands appearing in a higher order k · p approximation are shown to give rise to a small probability of back scattering.

Chirality-dependent van Hove singularities (vHs) of the one-dimensional electronic density of states (DOS) are discussed in connection with resonant Raman spectroscopy. The effect of trigonal warping on the energy dispersion relations near the Fermi energy splits the peaks of the density of states for metallic nanotubes, and the magnitude of this effect depends on the chiral angle of the carbon nanotube. The width of the peak splitting has a maximum for metallic zigzag nanotubes, and no splitting is obtained for armchair nanotubes or semiconducting nanotubes. We also find an additional logarithmic singularity in the electronic DOS for carbon nanotubes that is related to a two-dimensional singularity, which does not depend on either the diameter or the chirality.
